Nipple Shields

Nipple shields should be reserved for an extremely small minority of unique circumstances.  Baby Friendly hospitals restrict the use of pacifiers and bottles, yet moms are often provided with nipple shields that act as a pacifier at the breast when a baby isn’t transferring milk.  It is important to stimulate mom’s milk, reduce swelling from IV fluid in mom’s breasts, and allow sleepy/disorganized babies to wake up after birth.  But a nipple shield provided immediately after birth can cause a cascade of problems with lactation in the ensuing days.
