One of the more distressing things moms can experience postpartum is hair loss. Pregnancy stimulates hair growth and nail growth, and even women with thin hair can develop lustrous locks (sometimes, not always!). All of this changes postpartum when mom’s estrogen and progesterone hormones plummet to post-menopausal levels.
Just as the timing of resuming the menstrual cycle can be widely variable (and all within normal limits) for different women, hair loss postpartum is also difficult to generalize. The one thing to understand is that there is NO MAGIC BULLET (and you want to avoid spending a lot of money to figure this out). Make sure you are eating well and minimizing stress (easier said than done, but important if you’re able – exercise and healthy outdoor time can make a huge difference).
The initial loss WILL subside, so it’s important to not stress that you are going bald. In outlier circumstances where hair loss persists to a more considerable level, your primary care or dermatologist can discuss prescription medications for regrowth.
