Significant blood in the spit up of babies, and significant blood in the diaper obviously warrant evaluation and consideration of more serious concerns .
However, in the setting of mom having nipples that are traumatized/blistered/cracked/bleeding, an infant very well may have chunks of blood-tinged spit up until mom’s nipples heal.
Likewise, if a mom has significant hyperlactation (oversupply) of milk, the baby may have occasional streaks of blood in the diaper. This is related to very rapid transit of high-volume breastmilk through the colon, producing a mild colitis (inflammation). These babies often have frequent stools that also may be green, foamy, or mucousy. If this doesn’t resolve with decreasing mom’s production to a normal level, the baby needs evaluation.
