Nursing Strike

Babies don’t “strike” against nursing. They simply get FAR less interested in it (particularly during the day) beginning as early as three months old. They aren’t newborns anymore, and are curious about their world.

Moms may panic that their baby is suddenly not as interested in nursing, or nursing for very short periods of time, or not nursing at all (the so-called “strike”). They often switch to bottles (most distracted babies are going to be better with a bottle, because it doesn’t require focusing at mom’s breast and missing out on the world around them). Or they continually try to put the baby back to the breast when the baby is not interested. This can result in a lot of stress for baby, and then the baby may actually refuse to nurse at all during the day, or cry a lot in the process.

If your baby is gaining weight and meeting developmental milestones, don’t worry and don’t push the baby to nurse! Your baby will tell you what he needs!
