Diaper rash is common with untreated hyperlactation (oversupply) because the babies are peeing and pooping so frequently as a result of all the milk going through their system!
It is a myth that you need to “dry out” a diaper rash to make it heal. Just like you don’t “dry out” burns or other wounds on the body (and you don’t “dry out” nipples!!), you need the skin to remain moist (with oil-based or other very thick moisture, not water-based such as breastmilk or urine) and covered at all times.
This is a baby that was having progressive erosion of her diaper rash with use of vaseline (petroleum) (left image). We changed the regimen to a thick zinc paste (Burt’s Bees has 40 percent zinc oxide and no petroleum, and is available over the counter without a prescription) and the baby began to heal very nicely (right photo) within one week.
