This mama jumped Jessica’s fence and gave birth in their yard. The fawn was too small to follow mom over the fence again, but mama was returning to nurse the baby in the yard! Animal control said to leave them alone and the fawn will jump when it’s big enough. I wonder if the mama gave birth in their yard on purpose, for extra safety for her fawn.

Elephants nurse nearly exclusively for two years and continue for four years. This is one of the many reasons why poaching for ivory tusks is so devastating to the elephant population. It is impossible to replicate elephant milk for orphaned calves, so there is a high mortality — even when cared for in rescue organizations like Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mama sheep was not at all interested in nursing her lambs this morning (and as my friend notes in the video, she’s pooping at the same time she’s shaking them off … apparently finding alone time to do their business is just as hard for farm animals as it is for human parents!
