Engorgement

Engorgement is nearly universal with the onset of lactogenesis II (“milk coming in”), and can cause pain and red, swollen breasts.  It is important to control pain and feed or express what an infant needs, but not to stimulate the breast more or aim to “empty.”  This can start a vicious cycle of hyperlactation (oversupply).  Massage of the breast can result in tissue damage.
