Significant chest wall injury or burns on breast during childhood prior to puberty can impact lactation if the breast gland isn’t able to develop as a result of scarring and/or nerve and blood vessel damage. A significant injury to the breast after puberty can also cause challenges.

In other situations, a burn injury may not pose significant problems. This patient exclusively breastfed multiple children. If you have a history of surgery, trauma, or burns on your chest wall and/or breast, seek prenatal breastfeeding counseling and close postpartum support.
